What Are Picture Frame Mats And Their Uses

Picture frame mats are a staple in the picture framing industry. A mat is a thin flat piece of paper based material like cotton. It is placed along the inside edge of the picture frame establishing a border around the picture and draws attention and focus on it. Matting a picture frame serves to preserve a photo by separating it from the glass as well as give that added decorative appeal to the whole look.

There are two types of picture mats available made from materials that are either acid or acid free. Acid free picture mats protect the life of your photo. Acid based mats cause mat burn, brown markings that merge with the displayed piece itself.

Most mats today are acid free, but it is always safe to request it specifically since acid based mats are still widely available.  Also request lignin free; lignin is a wood based polymer often found in paper based materials that contribute to mat burn. If a picture frame mat turns brown or yellow in color then it is made from acidic based matting. And lastly, request a picture mat that has been strengthened with calcium carbonate to an alkaline reserve of 3% to 5% so that your photos won’t degrade further still over time.

Mat materials and picture frame backings that are made from 100% cotton fiber, acid free and lignin free and also are buffered with calcium carbonate in an alkaline reserve are the best picture mats to use. They protect and increase your picture framing projects for long-term longevity.

Picture frame mats come in all sorts of colors with some including cloth coverings like linen, silk, suede or leather. Decorative coatings patterned into the mats such as metallic or textured coatings from rice paper can also be found. Most matting is sold pre-cut or come in batches for your own do it your own projects. Customization picture frame services include mat cuttings specifically tailored to fit individual picture frames upon request.

I think store bought ready made frames are the ones that are mass produced frames and come cheap so no, no info is given that the matting cause or doesn't cause mat burn. Also, if their cheap then my guess is that they'll cause mat burn for sure as mat burn free mats must be expensive.

Ready made frames in stores don't tell you that the frame mat included is not going to cause mat burn. Why? You'll know only if you customize the frame and special order it, i guess. Such a hassle.

No wonder my grandparents picture frames, well most of them anyway, have that yellow color look material inside. Mat burn, who knew! Time to reset my gramps favorite picture frames before the photos get ruined.
