What Is A Picture Frame Moulding

Drooling over a friend's wedding picture that looked so good gave me an opportunity to learn something new, what a picture frame moulding is and how it is used. The frame outside and within looked good enough to display on its own and made the picture stand out with aliveness and color. My friend who is an amateur photographer told me about this very obvious and yet mysterious aspect to picture framing.

A picture frame moulding or molding is one option of enhancing the beauty of a beloved picture. It is also called a fillet. It is a smaller piece of frame that is fitted inside the larger frame. It is used mainly to draw the eye to the picture within the actual frame. It is typically made from various wood like oak, pine, ash or beech. Others are made from polystyrene and rare ones are made from metal. They are constructed very much like the standard picture frame, but are fitted underneath or in between the matting.

Frame mouldings can also be used to construct regular ready made frames from precut sections, but are typically used for decorative purposes and are widely available in your local picture framer store or by a picture supplies manufacturer. If your pictures were take by a professional then he or she would be the best person to ask for a good moulding and picture frame recommendation.

Different frame moulding colors and styles range from solid colors of real wood to multi colors and color combinations like black and white. Also available are layered browns that imitate real wood colors in nature as well as gold and silver leafed finishes and veneers in custom or pre selected sections. Displaying a more rustic or antique look to your picture frames is now easily achievable, thanks to affordable mouldings.

Cost varies according to the material used and installation or shipping fees apply if you are not doing the actual framing yourself. Most are sold in sections in boxes or by custom chop upon request by picture frame suppliers. Prices range around $10 to $100 dollars.

Picture frame mouldings can easily be used to update and beautify your picture frames and pictures in assorted styles and finishes. Anyone can do it themselves, but a professional picture framer is highly recommended in order to achieve that perfect look.

It would be difficult to reset the frame yourself if you haven't done it before. A pro will make it easier and fast, but as you said, it will cost more. You could check out your local arts and crafts classes, they usually have framing projects going on and you can learn to do it yourself.

Can I get this as kits and just insert to my frames? I'm thinking it will be less expensive that way.But I'm not really good with my hands so it might be difficult. I'd like to be able update my picture frames and make them look nice and different without buying new frames.

Moulding is British, Canadian and Australian spelling. The U.S spelling used is usually MOLDING. It can be confusing but they mean the same, and both acceptable spellings as well. And I think are pronounced the same too.

Is Moulding also spelled molding? I came across both spellings and just want to be clear on which is which. A custom frame shop near me is adding mouldings to my picture frame and it will look so beautiful afterwards. I only wish I can keep it. but it is for another as a gift and I'm glad it will look great.
